Mehera Shaw Announces Relaunching of Brand and Website

June 19, 2013

Mehera Shaw announces the relaunching of our namesake women's brand and website
Mehera Shaw is an artisanal lifestyle brand: inspired by the artisan textiles of India, styled for the conscious, modern living.

The Label: Decidedly Feminine - Uniquely Sustainable
Our namesake women’s label is a contemporary East-West aesthetic for the sophisticated, well-traveled woman: vibrant artisan prints, soft tailoring, feminine silhouettes, and comfortable layers with high wearability, for work and casual wear. Mehera Shaw uses natural fibers, organic cotton, handloom (khadi) and block prints in our collections.

The Mehera Shaw Woman
The Mehera Shaw woman is 25+, confident, creative, sophisticated and identifies with a East-West fusion aesthetic.  Her lifestyle reflects the dialogue between East and West, between artistry and modern life.

Achievements/Plans
Mehera Shaw has recently relaunched our women’s label; a collection of upscale separates with emphasis on tunics and leggings, followed by dresses and blouses.  Mehera Shaw will produce three collections annually: festive/winter, spring and high summer.

Points of Sale: Ecommerce Plans
Points of sale include a retail boutique in Jaipur, India and online shopping for both the Indian and international markets.   Mehera Shaw will relaunch our ecommerce shopping site specifically for the Indian market in August 2013.  Product range includes women’s easy-wear separates for work and casual wear, nightwear, upcycled accessories and artisan printed organic cotton fabric.
Marketing Plans
Mehera Shaw will seek shop-in-shop, wholesale partnerships and ultimately franchise opportunities for their namesake label as well as for its family-oriented lifestyle branded collections.  Mehera Shaw’s goal is to create a fully transparent, vertical brand for sustainable living.

Sister Collections: in development
Mehera Shaw is developing product lines for our sister labels for the whole family, intended to launch by spring 2014.  As a lifestyle brand, the messaging is about family and clothing for a conscious lifestyle in fusion oriented world; all styles express an East-West aesthetic. Sister-labels include: Shireenbai Kitty, a colorful collection of dresses and separates for girl’s 2-10 years; Sarojini, a boho masala chic look for the teen's to women’s youth market; Adeem, a collection of men’s classic cuts in high-quality artisan fabrics, and; Mandali a range homewares, upcycled accessories and project-based textiles such as do-it-yourself sewing kits.

Philosophy
Mehera Shaw’s commitment is to a cradle-to-cradle approach to fashion.  We believe sustainable fashion is only sustainable through quality design, which wears well over time and reflects the story of its production.  We use sustainable fabrics such as handloom wool, ahimsa silk, certified organic cottons, artisan textiles, and upcycled textiles in every collection.  We use only fair labour garment production and actively look for partnering with artisan textile projects supporting innovative development in upcycling, and micro social enterprise.  Mehera Shaw believes that good design can and does go hand-in-hand with beautifully made, artisan textiles; that sustainability, small-scale production and good design are a good fit and the way of the future.

Fashion Revolution 2023: A Call to Major Brands
Fashion Revolution 2023: A Call to Major Brands

April 28, 2023

A decade after the Rana Plaza disaster that sparked a worldwide fashion revolution, we have made some progress but are still fighting for equitable, accountable and transparent supply chains. . . . . Too often in this movement, we focus on demanding compliance from manufacturers and demanding that brands work only with compliant manufacturers. We don’t rethink the underlying global dichotomy of colonialism that landed us here in the first place, and which still allows brands to be complicit in continuing to feed the imbalance.

WASHCARE

All garments have been washed several times during the printing/dyeing and manufacturing process.

CARE for 100% cotton

We recommend cold water machine wash (up to 30 degrees celsius) with a bio detergent and either tumble dry on low heat or line dry in shade for all of our 100% cotton garments/homewares (except for quilts).

Iron on reverse side of garment following fabric settings.

Do not use bleach or stain remover.

Cold water wash and low heat drying or line drying in the shade will increase the life of the garment, prolong the vibrancy of the colors and reduce energy use. Shrinkage on all cottons is minimal, approximately 3%.

Garments/homewares are dyed or printed using AZO free, low-impact, pigment or reactive dyes unless otherwise noted.  These dyes are color-fast, but care should still be taken to wash with like colors to retain the vibrancy of the colors.

CARE for 100% cotton quilts

For quilts with cotton fill, we recommend spot or light surface cleaning only with a damp cloth and mild detergent.  Eco-friendly dry cleaning is also recommended.

CARE for herbal/vegetable dye items

Vegetable dyes are not colorfast and are specifically marked in the product description.  We strongly recommend that all vegetable dye products be washed once before use in a cold water wash with minimal detergent.  Wash separately. Tumble dry on low heat or line dry in shade.  Iron on reverse side.  Do not use bleach or stain remover.

Please keep in mind that indigo dye does continually fade over time.  This is the nature of true indigo dye and is not a defect, but rather a sign of the 'living' nature of the dye.

CARE for silk and cotton/silk

For our silk and cotton silk garments/homewares, we also recommend gentle cycle machine wash cold water (up to 30 degrees celsius) or delicate hand washing to increase the life of the garment and reduce the environmental footprint from energy use, detergents and water wastage.

Tumble dry on low heat or line dry in shade.

Iron on reverse side of garment following fabric settings.

Do not use bleach or stain remover.

Dry cleaning using an eco-friendly service is also recommended.

CARE for linen and cotton/linen

For our linen and cotton linen garments/homewares, we also recommend gentle cycle machine wash cold water (up to 30 degrees celsius) or delicate hand washing to increase the life of the garment and reduce the environmental footprint from energy use, detergents and water wastage.

Tumble dry on low heat or line dry in shade.

Iron on reverse side of garment following fabric settings.

Do not use bleach or stain remover.
